Fretwork at the Coconut shy
Lynne Hoare
Ireland
Has anyone noticed that ‘The News’ distributed by various media is depressingly repetitive and fails to emphasize the jeopardy threatening our planet. People are enduring/instigating difficulty, disaster, disease and war. Many lack a home and long for improved circumstances.
Sadly, human nature often displays a propensity for aggression, clamour and strife. The traditional fairground attraction of hurling wooden balls at targets offers the possibility of winning a coconut and losing some ire.
Now is the time for everyone to possess their own empty column, pillar or tower.
For myself: a slender tower of shelf lined compartments ascending to the highest; a light and airy chamber, offering a peaceful place for reflection, contemplation and ease.
Birr, a town renowned for being a seat of learning, discovery and invention is land-locked.
Perhaps this creates a yearning for a glimpse of the sea.
Some contents of the collage: this is attached to a redundant corrugated plastic electioneering board, framed by ends of newsprint rolls and a Sunday Newspaper. The word coconut-shy is spelt by flags used on ships (International Code of Signals 1913). The sun: a 19th C. horse decoration, the rays represented by Pick-a-Sticks/Spillikins. Limewood swallows search for insects.
